The short answer
Does hosting location affect SEO? Only a little, and it is not a ranking switch. Google says server location is not a definitive signal of who your site is for.1 Hosting can still affect how fast your pages load, and speed is part of the page experience Google recommends you get right.2
Does server location affect Google rankings?
Google's advice on sites for several countries says the server location is often physically near your users. It can be a signal about your intended audience. But Google also says it is "not a definitive signal", because some sites use CDNs or are hosted in a country with better infrastructure.1
So an Australian business does not lose rankings just because its server sits overseas. Google's same advice names country-code domains as another audience signal, because they are tied to a specific country. A .com.au domain is an example.1
Does hosting affect SEO through speed?
Yes, in an indirect way. Google says good Core Web Vitals are highly recommended for success in Search. It lists targets such as the main content loading within 2.5 seconds.2
Hosting can affect how long a page takes to start loading. That delay is called time to first byte (TTFB). Web.dev says good TTFB is 0.8 seconds or less, and poor is more than 1.8 seconds. It calls those numbers a rough guide, and TTFB is not itself a Core Web Vitals metric.3
We did not find a source that measures how much server distance changes load time for Australian visitors. If speed matters to you, test your own site rather than assuming.
Do I need Australian hosting for an Australian website?
No, you do not need it. Nothing we found says Australian hosting is required to rank in Australia, and Google calls server location "not a definitive signal".1
Australian hosting is a good fit if most of your visitors are in Australia and you want your server in the same country as them. Whether it makes your site faster is something to test. It is worth checking where a host's servers actually are before you buy.
Is Hostinger Australian?
Hostinger is a web host, and readers ask where it hosts sites. Its support page lists web and cloud hosting data centres in Europe, Asia ("India, Indonesia and Malaysia"), North America and South America ("Brazil"). Australia is not in that list. Its CDN also operates in "additional locations, such as Johannesburg (South Africa), Japan, and Sydney (Australia)".4
So on that page Sydney appears only as a CDN location, not as a hosting data centre. Hostinger's lists change over time, so check the page again before you buy.
How a CDN reduces the distance problem
A content delivery network (CDN) is a group of geographically distributed servers.5 Google also notes that some sites use CDNs, which is one reason it does not treat server location as definitive.1 Check your host's help pages to see whether a CDN is included.
Australian vs overseas hosting: pros and cons
We found no source comparing Australian and overseas hosts on price, choice or support hours, so we make no claims about those. What the sources do support is this:
- Australian hosting puts the server in the country your visitors are in. Google says server location can be a signal about your intended audience, but not a definitive one.1 - Overseas hosting is fine for ranking in Australia on that evidence. Google also says some sites use CDNs, which is why server location is not definitive.1
Compare plans in AUD on the day you buy. If you use a hosted builder, such as when you create a Squarespace website, build a website on Canva or create a website on WordPress.com, check its help pages for where it hosts your site. Then spend your effort on the content and on a .com.au domain.
