The short answer

The com au domain price depends on the registrar. auDA says: ".au domain name providers (registrars and resellers) set their own retail price for .au domain names available to the public."1 As one example, on 28 October 2026 VentraIP showed $9.95 a year for a first-year .com.au and $22.95 a year to renew, with a dollar sign only and no stated currency or GST.3 Budget for the renewal figure, not the first-year deal.

A .com.au costs whatever your registrar decides to charge. The useful number is the renewal price, because you’ll pay it every year after the first.

How much is a .com.au domain?

There's no single price. Every registrar sets its own. auDA says ".au domain name providers (registrars and resellers) set their own retail price for .au domain names available to the public."1

Here's one real example. On 28 October 2026, VentraIP's .com.au page showed a first-year price of $9.95 a year and a renewal price of $22.95 a year.3 That's the page's own figure; it didn't state a currency or GST, so the Australian dollars here are our reading.

Check the registrar's checkout before you pay. We looked at one provider, so treat it as an example, not a market average. Prices on a page can change, and a promotion can end without notice.

When you compare, line up the same things: the first-year price, the renewal price and the term. Also check whether a price includes GST. auDA's own wholesale prices don't, as the next section shows.

Why does renewal cost more than registration?

At VentraIP, the first-year price is a discount. Its own page says: "Discount applies to the first year on new standard registrations only."3

Its blog warns about the same trap. "Some inflate the initial cost, others use cheap entry prices with high renewal fees."4 So compare the renewal price, because that's what you'll pay every year after the first.

What does auDA charge, and how much of the price is that?

auDA publishes a wholesale price. Here's its figure: "Wholesale price per annum set as of 1 October 2026: AUD$9.50 for a domain name licence in any .au namespace."1

It adds that "Wholesale prices are exclusive of GST."1 The wholesale price rose from A$8.64 to A$9.50 (ex GST).2

That's auDA's wholesale figure, not your price. Retail prices are set by registrars and resellers, so look at the renewal price on the checkout page.

Can I pay for more than one year at once?

Yes. auDA says ".au domain name licences are available to be registered for a period of 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 years."1

A longer term can save you remembering a renewal date. Whether a registrar's first-year discount applies to a longer term is up to them. Read the checkout page, because VentraIP's footnote says its discount is for "the first year".3

Can you actually register one?

Price isn't the only gate. Our page on who can register a .com.au covers the eligibility rules, and a low price won't help if you don't qualify.

If you're weighing up endings, our comparison of the shorter .au ending and .com.au covers that choice.

A domain is also separate from hosting. Where your host's servers sit is a different question, which we answer in does hosting location affect SEO.

Once you own a name, you connect it inside your site builder. Our Wix website guide and Squarespace walkthrough show where that step sits.
